How Data Integration, Cloud Platforms and Advanced Analytics Are Transforming Biotech R&D

by Justin Tyler,  0 Comments

The use of data in the biotech research and development sector is on the rise. By the time we reach the mid 2020s the success of a biotech company will depend not just on the scientific knowledge but also on it’s ability to collect, connect and analyze huge amounts of data. Genomics, proteomics, imaging, lab instrumentation, clinical trials, and real-world evidence are the sources of massive datasets. The current problem for biotech could be R&D is the possibility of not having enough data but rather the issue of data being in different places.

It is now through data integration, cloud platforms and advanced analytics that the above becomes possible. The three of them combined are establishing a new basis for the R&D of biotech which is faster, smarter, and more scalable across the whole lifecycle of biotech companies.

The Growing Data Complexity in Biotech Research

Modern biotech research and development generate data throughout the entire process. The very first research comes up with genomic sequences, protein profiles, and results of screening. Preclinical investigations introduce animal testing, imaging studies, and toxicity evaluations. Clinical studies deliver data concerning the patients, biomarkers, and outcomes over time. Moreover, real-world data derived from health records stored electronically and from wearables is gaining prominence as well.

In the past, most of these data resided in various systems managed by different departments. The scientists frequently were forced to devote a greater portion of their time to data cleaning and reconciling rather than to data analysis. This disintegration of processes prolonged the time needed for discoveries and at the same time increased the chance of losing important insights. As production lines grew more complicated, the requirement for combined data systems became inevitable.

Data Integration as the New R&D Backbone

Data integration has now become the backbone of biotech research and development. Organizations are no longer working with siloed databases, they are building up unified data layers that link together the experimental, clinical, and operational data of one place. Through these integration layers, the researchers can follow the insights through the whole pipeline, starting from early hypothesis to the clinical outcomes.

Integrating the different sources of data allows the teams to discover connections that were not visible before. For instance, the gene expression patterns resulting from early research can be associated with the patient response data obtained during the clinical trials. The manufacturing data can even be traced back to the molecular design decisions made. This whole visibility from the end to the beginning not only leads to a better understanding of the science but also to improved operational efficiency.

Moreover, data integration promotes collaboration. Data that has standardized way and is easily accessible makes it possible for teams working in biology, chemistry, data science, and clinical development to all be pulling from the same source of truth. This not only minimizes the wastage of efforts but also accelerates the whole process of making decisions.

Advanced Analytics Driving Deeper Insights

After the data is integrated and has become available in the cloud, the advanced analytics take the lead in the transformation process. Machine learning, predictive modeling, and AI-based pattern recognition are becoming the main tools along with traditional statistical analysis.

Advanced analytics is a tool that facilitates biotechnology groups in pointing out relevant signals among the biological data as the noise. The machine learning models are capable of finding even very close connections between the molecular traits and the clinical outcomes. The predictive analytics can tell which compounds are most likely to be successful and, thus, the risk of having to undergo a costly trial and error process in the late stages is minimized.

Moreover, analytics has brought a revolution in the experimental design. Instead of carrying out the actual testing for each and every possible variable, the models can point out the most enlightening experiments that should be conducted next. This method brings down the expenses and at the same time quickens the learning process, especially in such advanced fields as protein engineering and cell therapy development.

The Future of Biotech R&D

In the near future, data integration, cloud platforms, and advanced analytics will be there as usual in biotech R&D. The winners will be the organizations that regard data as a strategic asset instead of a research by-product.

Combining data from all stages of the pipeline, building on top of a flexible cloud infrastructure, and using advanced analytics will enable biotech companies to develop products faster, take fewer risks, and gain more insights.

The next era of biotechnology will see the role of data architecture and analytics being as important as that of biology in the discovery process.
